Multifunctional tables

Architecture, Furniture Design, Industrial Design
Project Overview
These multifunctional tables were conceived in response to a client’s desire for a modular furnishing solution—one capable of adapting to the fluid nature of their space. With the room alternating between functions—a collaborative workspace one day, a setting for yoga and reflection the next—the tables needed to transition with ease and minimal footprint.

Informed by this flexibility, the design enables the tables to shift between horizontal surfaces and vertical displays. When not in use, they nest discreetly along the wall, functioning as shelving for curated objects. When activated as tables, they join together seamlessly—both with one another and with the client’s existing half-circle pieces—to form a larger communal surface. The objects once displayed on the shelves can remain integrated, transforming the tables into dual-purpose elements: spatial dividers, storage units, and surfaces of engagement.

The result is a design that blurs the line between furniture and infrastructure—responsive, efficient, and deeply attuned to the rhythms of its environment.
Configuration 1

In Configuration 1, the tables converge—alongside the existing half-circle elements—to form a unified, expansive conference table. This assemblage not only establishes a central gathering surface but also generates an interstitial void between the inward-facing shelves. This spatial cavity serves as ad hoc storage, offering a discreet zone for stowing items while maintaining the table’s visual and functional coherence.

Use case: conference table, co-working space, workshop, tasting events

Configuration 2

In Configuration 2, two tables are paired with a single half-circle element to create dual medium-sized workstations. Positioned with their ends abutting the wall, these assemblies frame a clear circulation path along one side—facilitating intuitive movement through and around the space. As in the previous configuration, the inward orientation of the shelving surfaces generates a central void, which serves as ad hoc storage—integrated seamlessly within the layout to support both functionality and spatial fluidity.

Use case: conference table, co-working space, workshop, tasting events

Configuration 3

In Configuration 3, all tables are aligned along the perimeter, transforming into an extended array of shelving. This arrangement prioritizes openness, liberating the central floor area to accommodate activities that demand unobstructed space. The backside of the shelving units offers additional capacity for discreet storage, enabling the environment to remain clean, minimal, and adaptable to a wide range of spatial programs.

Use case: displaying goods, open studio activities, yoga studio, gatherings

Closing Thoughts
While the presented configurations represent the primary use cases envisioned during the design process, the system allows for a multitude of other spatial arrangements, each responsive to the evolving needs of the user. Future iterations include the development of accessories to enhance the shelving function—tailored elements for displaying a variety of object typologies with greater specificity and intention.

The tables, constructed with substantial mass, possess an inherent stability that anchors them in place. However, there is an opportunity to further refine the modular logic through discreet joinery or connective hardware—strategies that would allow the components to lock into specific configurations without compromising their flexibility or aesthetic clarity.
